To Our Bay Area Bears Fan Club Members:
We are missing you already! Usually at this time the Windy City crew is excitedly making plans for the upcoming season, looking forward to seeing all the fans, digging out Bears banners and prizes from our storage shed while checking in with Ronnie, who manages to find more and more novel BEARS prizes with each new season. So, as with many things since mid-March, we are all feeling a little flat, trying to get through this tough time of Covid and focused on keeping all of our great employees safe.
With the dining room and bar closed as of March 17, we had no idea what to expect as we braced to see how our first weekend would be. The weekend is when our many loyal regulars come in to schmooze with one another over a beer at the bar, complain about their boss or what a crazy week they’ve had…while digging into their favorite Chicago-style food. I always especially love catching up with the kids as they do homework, tell us about the week’s school and sports activities, vacation plans – or just have their eyeballs glued to their tablets while I’m insisting on a hug. We love it all! Hard to describe the joy of seeing these “kids” return through our doors as high school students, college students, foreign-exchange students then brides, grooms and – ultimately – parents.
So, these many months later, Bob and I are beyond grateful for the community outpouring of support for our little pizza/BBQ joint. Our weekend customers continue to order for pick-up/delivery, helping keep Windy City afloat. While many of our Bears fans don’t live near San Mateo, we thank those of you who do for your continued support.
Borel Square Shopping Center was sold last Summer, so we didn’t even have our “understanding” landlord of almost 30 years to work with us as we navigated through it all. The new landlord is quite a different story, so thank heavens for Governor Newsom’s mandates protecting small businesses during this pandemic.
So that’s been the landscape since March and here we are, going into Fall, when we have to adjust our thinking to not hosting our Bears fans this season – after 22 years! I retired from my BofA job in 2007 and soon after, started helping out Bob at Windy City (so much for retirement!) We’ve seen many changes at the Bears Fan Club over the years and I can honestly say that you folks are an inspiration – for good fun, camaraderie, loyalty and all around decency. Our employees are quick to tell us which shifts they want to work – and Sunday mornings are high on everybody’s list. That says a lot about all of you, the fans.
Starting with the 9/13 opener, Bob and I hope you are all planning to enjoy the season from the comfort of your den – gathering with your “pod,” singing the song and raising a glass or two. We will be doing the same but missing every single one of you, for sure!
Our theme “We Love Our Customers” continues and our heartfelt thanks go out to all of you for your ongoing support!
Stay safe everyone and we’ll see you for the 2021 Season, with bells on! Hugs to all and Go Bears!
~Trish & Bob
p.s. from Trish; For those of you I text with, 650-533-3960, I cleverly managed to drop my cell into a pail of water while gardening, and haven’t had the fortitude to stand in the long line at VERIZON for a replacement, but it’s on my To-Do list.
Hello Bears fans! This is Ronnie. I just wanted to wish everyone well and let you know I will be thinking of all of you this season while we’re away from Windy City Pizza.
