The Best BBQ Doesn’t Have to Adhere to Tradition
Enjoying summer is fun and easy in the comfort of your own home. All you need is a grill, and you’ll have hungry friends and family flocking to your home eager for a tasty bite of the best bbq on the block.
But are you tired of grilling the same thing week after week, year after year? Hot dogs, burgers, chicken or maybe even summer vegetables for the more “conscious” eater? Perhaps you’re ready for a different culinary experience using the grill in your backyard, for times you and the family can’t jump in the car and head to your favorite San Mateo BBQ restaurant.
Luckily, grilling doesn’t have to be limited to the traditional meat selections… There are a number of foods that turn out great when cooked on a grill, and we’ve rounded up a short list to get you started:
Of course we had to mention pizza! We are proud to offer the best pizza in our area, and that’s because we are so passionate about making it the right way. But did you know that you can make great tasting pizza on the grill? (This is also the BEST way to reheat pizza, too!) It may seem strange, but it’s one of the best ways to keep the heat outside your home on hot summer days when firing up the oven to 475 degrees sounds unbearable. Simply roll out your crust and brush it with olive oil and make sure to also oil the grill surface as well. Grill the crust on both sides and then add the sauce and toppings of your choice. Don’t overdo it with the toppings you add, or the pizza will come out soggy. Once it is all prepared and cooking on the grill, it will be done fairly quickly. Most find that grilled pizza takes a lot less longer to cook than it does in the oven.
These yellow bundles of joy are good in just about anything, including smoothies, breads, chips — and even on the grill! You can cook them two ways, with the peel on or off. To cook them without the peel, simply peel the bananas, lay them on the grill and cook them until barely charred on the outside, but still soft in the middle. To cook them with the peel, cut them in half lengthwise (but don’t cut all the way through). Grill them with the open side down for about 3 minutes and then turn them over and add yummy dessert toppings like marshmallows, brown sugar, butter, caramel or hot fudge. Grill them for an additional 5 minutes, and you’ll have an amazing gooey dessert!
Swordfish & Salmon
Both fishes are heavy and sturdy so they work well on the grill. They are also healthy alternatives to red meat. To cook them on a grill, simply add your marinade or seasonings of choice, place them on the grill and cook to the desired doneness (medium-rare, medium, etc.).
These are just a few suggestions for different things you can grill, but the options are almost endless. You’ll have plenty of fun experimenting with these foods and many others. For more great BBQ and grilling tips, check out our blog!
